anybody any ideas about a book or books on how to keep the kids happy, safe and sane?
Someway I can lower the impact of this relationship to them?

Don't Alienate the Kids! by Bill Eddy is about divorced parents. But it actually contains a lot of strategies for bolstering them emotionally when they have a difficult other parent, whether or not they're in the same house. That might help.
There is also "When Dad hurts Mom: Helping your children heal from witnessing abuse" by Lundy Bancroft.
