Deciding to go no contact with a narcissistic father

Hello all,

I recently started seeing a new therapist after the loss of a family member, but very quickly started tackling long-standing personal issues developed due to a narcissistic father and years of emotional abuse. It was incredibly validating to hear the therapist immediately call him out as a narcissist and to understand that yes, I was abused. I have never felt love for the man and was grateful when he finally left my mom when I was in middle school, but I still had his presence looming over my life. Luckily, the older I've gotten (I'm now in my late 20's) the less contact we've had.

Even though I rarely have to deal with him, texts at holidays still trigger anger and hurt. Receiving "Happy Thanksgiving, I'm grateful for you" sent me into a rage. It never occurred to me until recently that I could just cut him off (or maybe I was too scared), but now I'm hoping to send him a final notice of "do not contact me" before I block him. I'll probably share a more detailed post in the "Going No Contact with a PD Parent" thread.

Anywho, when trying to purchase the book "Out of the FOG" online for my mom, I happened across this site. I'm hoping this community will help me find even more validation and peace. Thanks for reading, and I wish you all a Happy New Year!

Hello lazyenby,

Hello and welcome to this site and forum.

I can relate to having a therapist validate that stuff. When I went NC and told a counsellor I was NC and they didn't flinch, nor did they question me or challenge me or judge me for it...I felt SO relieved. I felt a weight lift I didn't even know I had been carrying. I am glad you've had a counsellor who validated this for you too.

Narcissistic parents leave us with a lot of things to learn and I am glad you are here to post and ask questions and share.

It is never too late to learn how to heal from narc abuse. Welcome.

Sincerely,

Trees
