DSS took a stand...how do we react?

Hi all, and happy Halloween, if you're celebrating that!
DSS (early teen) made a decision to go to his pickup soccer game this afternoon. It's a fun group of teenagers/adults who know each other kind of randomly, and my SO and I play too. DSS's decision was big, because it was a uNPDmom weekend, and in the past, he typically made excuses not to go on her weekends for fear of angering her. He has actually said "It's just simpler if I don't go", even though he LOVES it, and one time he even asked his dad not to go, because his mom didn't want him "spending extra time with his dad".  He seems to be more of the GC (SG left a few months ago).
So, now that he has taken this small stand for himself, I'd like to drop him a text to say something like he should be proud of himself for making the decision based on what he wanted to do. Something to that effect. Not backhanded, not a dig at his mother, just encouraging. Any thoughts on wording? Or should I just leave this alone?
(btw, this is just a guess, but there were likely repercussions to the decision, if not immediately when he made it, then this evening or possibly tomorrow)

I'd suggest just a general comment of how proud you are of the confident man he is becoming.

I'd leave any reference to the occasion and his mum out of any texts.  She may be reading them.

I'd save any comments for face-to-face verbal. I don't text things that could blow up a PD, especially where a child is involved.

Thanks all! I like the focus on confidence. And I can definitely see the benefit of it being in-person, though I actually doubt she's reading his texts. If she is, really, anything I send him could cause a blowup  :-/
