Cut off for not agreeing with politics

My physcopath NPD dad has just cut off all contact with me because I don't agree with his political views. He's extreme right wing (, I'm centre. Even though I've recently been in hospital and told him so, he's still not talking to me.

I realize this might be a mixed blessing but it still hurts.

It's deeply unreasonable that anyone would shut another down whatever their views on ANY subject, that they have no concept of agreeing to disagree and continuing on with life. That's not your fight or who you are, it's a choice - just as it is for him. Try and see this as him being who he is and that he's welcome to it. You don't have to be a sponge, absorbing whatever vitriol he spews nor do you have to explain yourself to him or anyone else.

I know it hurts, and I'm sorry. Finding acceptance is hard on the best of days.

I'm sure it does hurt. Doesn't seem right that a parent/child relationship could be severed because of politics. I'm sorry writingthepain.

My mother did the same because of political views. She couldn't hear or bother with people who had a different opinion. Being "right" all the time was her deal so if another person varied from that...watch out.

Yep. Could be any differing opinion with mine, literally something as mundane as preferring one color, food or flower over another. Didn't matter. She had to melt someone down, belittle them, write them off. It's all a personal affront and punishable offense.

My mom stopped talking to me over my opposition to the Iraq war.  "You are for us or for the terrorists"
It hurt a lot.  I was pissed family were being wedged against.
You know all these years later and I see it now for what it is.  A two way street you empathize with people with a different opinion.  You may not agree but you hear what they have to say and why.  Narcs dn't have that chip. They are always right always.  You are beneath.

WOW!   Just wow!    That is awful.   And, also why I refuse to get into a political discussion with my folks.   One ex hippie parent is now extremely right wing....I am also more in the center.   One bro is a former Marine.   One converted to Islam a month before 9/11.    I've long since learned that we don't talk about politics, religion, or ANYTHING emotional particularly if anyone has been drinking.   It goes pear shaped in a nanosecond.      If they start something, I just say "I hear you" and change the topic to something else.   Usually confuses the crap outta them.

But, to cut you off for something like this is just plain awful.      I'm so sorry

I dared to disagree out loud with PDmom about something political. Apparently she spent the next several months badmouthing me behind my back and wondering if I was "brainwashed." My brother only told me years later. If I'd known then, I probably would have gone NC, and that was before I was Out of the FOG. As nutty as she was, I'd always considered her loyal up until then. Now I know the truth.

I'm of the opinion that you can gauge another person's emotional maturity fairly accurately by how they respond to others who hold a different opinion, or adhere to a different way of life. Those that see any difference as "fightin' words" or take it as their personal mission to change your mind or cut you off completely for a difference of political belief/religion etc automatically get a little red flag. When people begin disagreeing strongly (aka foaming at the mouth) with things that I myself believe, I note it, avoid that topic in the future, and generally keep my thoughts to myself because I see no opportunity for a difference of opinion to be received respectfully and discussed politely.

It is 100% possible to disagree with somebody about something, discuss it thoroughly to understand where each party is coming from in a respectful, non-accusatory manner, and then everybody walks away having learned something about everybody else. Knowledge has been expanded, no one's feelings are hurt, and everybody is happy and the topic is not taboo. It's just not possible with pwPDs generally speaking...

Yes its hard when this happens..... Its the other way round with me an Dad.

Then again he's sexist, homophobic, and racist all in one go. I refuse to speak to him when he airs his "views" because they are so extreme especially when he does so in public.

My dad is also determined to make anyone's life practically unliveable if they disagree with him, and he's also just part of the "I hate everyone" club. I was literally born into a hate group.

It can be so difficult to explain to people that I don't have a relationship with him simply because he won't let me disagree with him. If they ever tried disagreeing with him, they'd understand -- they'd probably call the police too.
