I Was Shocked When....

I returned home from work, after picking up my daughter from her job because my uPDw had a what she referred to as "tummy problems" and couldnt get her, I sat down as I usually do to ask about how shes feeling and how her day went. She seemed to be in an ok place but proceeded to tell me that she was "so annoyed" with people (Christians) who's identity is in their mental health issues. She actually said that she has no empathy for Christians who use their mental health issues as their identity and use their social media to soapbox about their mental health. She went on to talk about her mother's long standing battles with depression and her twin sisters battle with drug, alcohol and sex addition. She even said to me, at one point some time ago that, she doesnt know she made it through the years without being impacted or having issues like they do. I was floored and I sat there and I know had a "look" on my face but she did not pick up on it (which she usually does or she mistakes a normal look for a nasty look) and I did not know what to say so I gave the unconcerned but slightly interested uh huh remark. Then the conversation went back to her tummy issues. Certainly an interesting exchange.

I had a similar experience when I was first coming Out of the FOG.  uNPDxh was ranting about his family and their interactions.  He said to me "My mother tries to manipulate me, but I don't fall for it."  It was all I could do not to laugh out loud.  I was astounded that he really believed that.  Long story short, I tried to argue the point with him and it didn't end well.  I think your "uh huh" response was a  much better choice.
