Evading the serving process

I prepared myself for this, but frustrating nonetheless.

It's been 30 days since I filed. The sheriff finally attempted service, but, of course, was unable to make contact. STBX's life is in a constant state of flux; she is perpetually moving from one place to another. I think she has moved.

Any experiences or success stories with serving papers? Are there other, better, legally sound methods I could try? (I'm in the US).

It is very common now for people to represent themselves (i.e., not hire a lawyer) in divorces. Because of this, your state or county might have a web page or other online resources specifically for self-represented parties in divorces. I suggest looking online for this. (The rules won't necessarily be the same in your state. I'm including this merely as an example of what to look for.)

Is it possible/legal to serve by email/digital means in the US? This is what my STBX did the other day, legally here in Canada (it's a good thing in my case, I didn't want them to have my address).
