Mom isolating due to covid

Dramatic Auntie visited for Christmas.  She didn't stay with us, thank goodness, but I ended up hosting both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at my house.  Auntie sounded like she had a cold on Christmas Eve and by Christmas Day, she was obviously sick.  She claimed it was "just bronchitis" (as she was hugging me hello, thanks a lot).  Anyway, by the day after Christmas, she was positive for covid, and within a few days, more than half of the 15 people who had come over to my house for Christmas were also positive, including my mom (not me or DH, though, at least not yet).

I am angry with Dramatic Auntie, although in fairness to her, my mom was eventually going to catch covid no matter what.  She is super social and, even with all her booster shots, it was only a matter of time. Mom has isolated for five days and finished a course of paxlovid, but she is still testing positive and still has moderate symptoms.  Her senior living facility is requesting that she isolate for five more days.  Normally, I'd think this is excessive, but mom looks and sounds terrible, and so it's probably best for her and everyone else in her building.

The problem is that with her covert NPD traits, this is killing her.  It's like watching storm clouds roll through.  Mom is leaving messages on my phone where she sounds completely distraught.  She is having regular meltdowns.  I have my phone turned off and am trying to limit my callbacks to once a day.  But the next five days are going to be difficult.

I realize this is something that just has to be endured.  But ugh!!!  That's all I can say about it.  Thanks for listening  :)

Dude. Whether just bronchitis or no, stay the hell home when you're sick. People do that, have always done that, everyone understands.

You can't fix this for mommie dearest either. It is what it is. I'm sorry she's melting down but seriously - what she expect you to do? You were exposed just like everyone else. They even bother to ask if you're okay??

I'd probably turn my phone off for a week. You can't do anything anyway, why be miserable with her? Up to you of course Sneezy.

Covid is making the rounds this holiday season (never stopped of course) but we all came down with non-covid crud. We were over it for three days when our kind and gracious aunt drove down. A 12 hour drive. When she realized she was coming down with something she offered to skip the visit and drive straight home. 17 more hours!!! We told her to stay anyway, stocked her up on cold/flu meds and let her get a couple days of rest and sunshine before heading home. We aren't sick and she is doing well at home.

But she offered not to stay despite the terrible inconvenience it would have been to her. Amazing how different people can be when their minds are healthy.

Thanks moglow - Of course mom expects me to call her several times a day and entertain her, but that is not going to happen.  She just has to ride this out.  She has already called a couple times today, asking me to come back and help her test again on Friday.  1. She is an adult and she needs to follow the directions and take a covid test by herself, and 2. It's really more about symptoms at this point.  If she feels better and her symptoms are going away, then she is probably safe to mask up and get out.  But, if she feels crappy (which she does) then she needs to stay away from others for a while longer, and for her own sake.  If she tries going out too soon, she could catch something else or get sicker herself.  Why do I even need to explain this to my mother?  Shouldn't this be adult common sense?

Andeza - Can we trade aunts?   ;D  You were very sweet to host your aunt and let her enjoy some sun before she went back home.  I hope everyone is recovered and feeling healthy again.

Well we could share, lol, but I wouldn't want dramatic auntie!  :bigwink:

She's on the mend, and we're better from whatever we had.

What on earth is that??!?!? My MIL did the same thing the visit before last. "Don't come too close, I have a cold!" While she's hugging us.,

They may look like adults, but I'm still waiting for them to act like it.

I really don't get this mindset. Whether we test positive or not, why not leave others be [so we don't spread it further] and deal with whatever symptoms we have in the meantime? Since she's in a senior center I'd bet staff is more than capable and available to help her retest.

And seriously, wth did people do before all the tests to tell us whether or not we have xyz illness? We dealt with whatever misery we had until it was gone. Grownups do that.
