A big set back

Hey all,

So I posted the other day that I was going to get therapy to discuss my relationship with my mum who physically and emotionally abused me and my dad who refused to acknowledge it, and also discuss some ways to gain confidence, set boundaries and form healthy relationships. I was super excited and was going to get it through my workplace. I went through the full assessment and they told me I can't get therapy through them because they only offer CBT and because I've had complex childhood trauma I can't qualify for it in case it's more damaging to me.

Im super gutted because I felt like I was going to get the help I need and now I feel completely set back. They gave me some websites to call but they're either one off calls or for therapy sessions that cost £45 weekly. Unfortunately I can't afford this because of the cost of living going up I just don't have that amount of spare income.

I've looked through the tool kit available and it's been SO helpful but now I'm worried I can't go alone and continue to implement the things I've learnt and also trust myself enough to stay no contact with my parents.

Just feel so set down and not sure what else is available to me or if there's any other learning tools, coping mechanisms or sessions anyone has accessed that's helped them.

Thank you :)

I'm sorry this happened to you. Such a bummer to lose promised help. I don't have suggestions, but I do offer my empathy.

That's disappointing. For now, maybe you can look into 12 step programs and check out if you can find some support there. They are free. And keep on the lookout for trauma therapy. YouTube is also a great source of information. Search for childhood trauma and you might come across some useful videos. You might also consider learning mindfulness meditation, it's a technique that helps when you go into your trauma response. Have you read 'From surviving to thriving ' by Pete Walker? Good luck!
I can't hate my way into loving myself.

Thank you for your help.

I've ordered the book and really looking forward to reading it. I also looked at 12 step programmes, I've found a group session I can attend on Sunday through a website called Adult Children. Even if I can't get therapy just going to try anything that might help :)

Miffy it's not a big setback unless we make it so. Think of it as a stall, a disappointment while you look in a different direction. I tend to look at what we're all going through as a cha-cha or two-step on even the best of days, you know a couple steps forward then one back. It's the movement, the continuing recovery that connects for me.

Even finding a therapist we connect with can be challenging sometimes. I'd encourage you to keep participating in discussions here in the meantime, even once you find therapy that works for you. Talk things through wherever it speaks to you and get different perspectives while sharing yours, guarantee you get ideas you'd not even considered yet.
