This is my first time ever posting something like this, but I'm in a place where I'm really seeking advice or insight from anyone who's been through something similar.

I'm trying to navigate the very heavy and painful reality of having a parent who is an alcoholic. It's something that's affected me in ways I'm still trying to fully understand, and I'm struggling with what the right steps are when it comes to protecting my peace and well-being.

How do you set healthy boundaries in this kind of situation? Is it even possible? Or, for those who've made the choice — is cutting them off completely what ultimately brought you the peace you needed?

I know every situation is different, but hearing how others have coped, healed, or found clarity would really mean a lot to me right now.

SweetPea52 - welcome to Out of the FOG. Thank you for sharing the difficulties that bring you here. I am sorry you are facing such challenges and thankful you have found this supportive community.

Having a parent who is an alcoholic is a complex kind of journey to healing, healthy boundaries and peace. That journey involves so much processing and many decisions, big and small, along the way.

I am sure you know about Alanon Family groups and the amazing work they do specific to supporting family members and friends of alcoholic loved ones.

We have a great toolbox at the drop down menus above that is incredibly helpful for the traits you encounter, or manipulative types of behaviors, to know how best to work through those. I return there often and have found such good insights from the tools.

The true gold, for me any way, is the conversations that take place on the forum boards with others who have experienced similar challenges. Having a mother who was addicted and had strong disordered traits, I can empathize with the pain of figuring out what is the next best step.

Take your time looking through the resources found throughout the forum boards. And when you are ready, join the conversations taking place. Keep coming back. It helps to break through from that isolation that easily surrounds us.
