Dealing with friend's anger: How can I respond to this?

Hi,

This morning my friend called me, and we started having a conversation about something to do with horse training. But it could have been about any other topic on which we disagreed, because what I can't deal with is not our differing opinions but how she treated me.

She tried to shut me and my opinion down my starting to shout when I refused to agree with her.  She was saying very inflammatory things, and when I tried to reason with her, she wouldn't listen, just became angrier.  I easily found a number of things on the internet about this topic, and read her an overview, which did a good job of explaining why this particular approach was likely to be a good one.  Probably, I shouldn't have done that; on the other hand, we not infrequently send and/or read each other information from the internet.

At any rate, she was yelling, and then declared, "End of discussion!" in this really hateful tone.  I found this offensive.  Why couldn't she just say, "Well, I guess we will just have to agree to disagree."

True confession:  I started to send her a brief email, saying that I really didn't want this topic to cause problems in our friendship.  But then I thought:  Why should I be the one to offer the olive branch?  I wasn't yelling, and I was open to continuing the discussion.

Now I am wondering what is going to happen going forward, or whether I should not worry at all.  I don't want to be yelled at!

I think you are right in wanting her to offer the olive branch because she was yelling at you. It's not ok to be yelled at. I don't know why this specific subject is triggering for her but she should figure it out instead of taking it out on you.

Thank you for your reply, walking on broken glass,

I did wait and did hear from my friend.  She acted as if nothing had happened, and so did I.

The truth is that although we can have discussions on some topics, she is a volatile person.  I am going to start keeping my distance from her.

Have a good Thanksgiving!
