The Christmas grief of being without a single person from my family of origin left is hitting me hard today.

It called to mind the tradition of Las Posadas, where St. Joseph leads the Holy Family from door to door in Bethlehem, only to be rejected. Well, according to tradition, those doors were all those of Joseph's family members. Which makes sense, since Joseph was of the house of David coming "home" to the city of David to be counted. Our Lord was rejected by his own, before he was even born. The Key of David was pushed aside by those who would have righteously professed to have been devoutly waiting for the Messiah. Who would have known Joseph and his need.

In the end, St. Joseph had to turn away from all the doors in the city, and prepare a place for Our Lord given by the charity of an innkeeper who did not know who He was.

But who did come to the Child: Shepherds. Kings. Angels.

Today I'm going with Joseph and Mary, turning away from the closed doors, not without grief, but going to prepare the manger.

Thanks for sharing and I never thought about St. Joseph being rejected by his family. For the 3rd year in a row I won't see my parents on Christmas in order to "keep the peace" and avoid a blowup ruining Christmas for my children.

I am glad you have faith and can welcome the Christ Child as you celebrate Advent. 

While you don't have your family of origin, I hope you can find some time of Joy this Holiday as a Joint Heir with of Jesus the Son of God.  You have family!

I know it can be a mix of emotions at times like this because they are so often intermingled with family, good bad or otherwise and with the experiences and sentiments that go along with it all. I hope that even with some painful thoughts memories, and loss and longing, thdy it will be a meaningful season for you.

I never heard that story about Joseph being rejected by his relatives but it makes sense since that is where they came from. I wonder if this was in part because of Mary being pregnant before they were married.
