The Global Compassion Coalition sent this out in their newsletter today. I have been thinking about this more and more because, like some of you, I have difficulty trusting people and forming lasting close relationships. I realize that when I try to have a positive interaction with someone it can make me feel better even if it's short. This helps me a lot in a culture that's quick to celebrate (as Captain Awkward says) "faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamily", BFFs since grade school, etc. Not all of us have that, but it doesn't mean we have to feel completely lost or isolated.

"Research from the Greater Good Science Center suggests that brief, positive interactions with strangers, such as a friendly exchange, shared laughter, or a moment of genuine attention, can have surprisingly lasting benefits for well-being. These moments of warmth help reduce loneliness and foster a sense of belonging that is not limited to our closest relationships. In a surprising twist, it appears that feeling seen and acknowledged by unfamiliar others can be just as nourishing as time spent with friends or family, reminding us that we are part of a larger social fabric.

Over time, these everyday encounters do more than lift our mood. Studies show they can increase trust in others, intellectual humility, and confidence in collective kindness, the belief that people, together, can act with care and goodwill. The takeaway is simple and hopeful: small moments of connection in public life aren't incidental. They quietly strengthen community, openness, and the conditions for a more compassionate society."

"Being humanitarian, being kind and loving, does not include entrusting my life or well-being to anyone whose intention or unconscious direction is to cause me harm. I am here to enjoy the life that Mother Earth gave me." ~ Ellen Jean Zoltak

This resonates hugely.

I didn't realise quite how powerful brief connections are until Covid, when so much was taken away. No more sharing a wordless moment of connection with a passer by because we were stuck at home, and hidden behind masks when going out. I noticed how much I missed shop assistants, people in my gym locker room and so on. Brief connections are particularly important for me because I have a massive problem with getting too close to anyone.
Don't let the narcs get you down!

Glad you had a similar takeaway to me! I'm really leaning in to this idea lately and it makes me feel pretty good, and definitely less lonely.
