A few weeks ago I was in the car on cell with updh. Later at home he claimed that I didn't say bye before disconnecting.
I thought I had,  maybe he didn't hear,  bad connection etc,  but that my habit is to say bye. He insisted I did not.
Next time I was on the phone with him in my car I emphasized BYE when done,  to be sure he could hear me.  Later at home he commented that I said it "with attitude" **sigh**
So I'm back to saying it normally.
Yesterday i had a dentist appt complete with novocaine. Called to say I'd  be home soon.
Got home,  he walked by me and said "you did that thing again" (as if it's in fact 'a thing' that I do... on purpose) "you didn't say bye" I stated that I had.  He decided to argue about it.  Several times I stated I could not argue,  as my mouth is numb.  He kept pushing it anyway.  Till i lost my temper (I should have mc'd but I was tired,  uncomfortable and already annoyed with him from the weekend,  so I didn't keep my cool) THEN he went with why was I so upset,  why was I making a big deal,  yelling...
Ugh.
At one point he agreed maybe it was hard to hear me cuz of my numb mouth
But he hadn't thought about that...
He knew I was coming from having dental work...
As usual it was all about him

Sorry you experience that frustration 11JB68!

I wish my stbx would have repetitively annoyed me with that one, because I would have walked out the door quietly for the last time, reopened the door and in full smart-ass said "oops, I did that thing again...", followed with "BYE!" and closed the door quietly as I walked to my car and drove away for good.

My opinion is that next time he says it to you, say "ok" and walk away vs "..I stated that I had."  Imo, he's throwing bait in your emotional pond and a JADE response is you taking the bait.  "Ok" is you recognizing the bait, but leaving it alone.

Hope your dental work heals quickly.

A meal of bread and water in peace is better than a banquet spiced with quarrels.

2 Timothy 1:7
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.

Proverbs 29:11
A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.

You just described a conversation I and my H have had a hundred times. The No you didn't,  and Yes I did argument.
Until, like SOT said, you recognize it as baiting, as it clearly is.
I've had this conversation and seen H give a sly smile, as though it was impossible to hide his joy at making me fluster.
When I started with the "Oh" reply, those little accusations stopped.  I took away the fun of the game.
Good luck!
