I have a copy of Pete Walker's book. I've read small excerpts, and it absolutely hits the bulls eye. I desperately want to read it to learn techniques and methods of healing. What really appeals to me and seems different about this book is that it goes beyond describing the phenomenon and resulting condition - it actually contains concrete suggestions for WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT.

However....I can't get through more than a few paragraphs without triggering extreme anxiety, panic and fear. Going to the 13 steps in Chapter 8 helps a bit, but not enough to resume reading.

I'd appreciate any input or suggestions you have on how to get started and persevere, please and thank you.

I am sure lots of people here have read the book but possibly even more on the sister site, Out of the Storm, might have done so, since that is specifically dedicated to Complex PTSD. You may want to have a look/join there, too.

I did not find that book particularly triggering so I can't advise from a place of experience. I would suggest that you go very slowly and carefully with anything you find triggering. If you have a therapist, maybe talk through the issues with them as they arise. It seems like it is raising a lot of issues and maybe emotional flashbacks for you. It might be helpful for you to have a think about what aspects of what you are reading are causing the problems now. If the main part of your abuse is from childhood it may help to remind yourself that you are now an adult who has choices and who can protect yourself even if it does not always feel like it.

Wishing you all the best

Such great advice, on many counts. Thank you for your thoughtful replies. I will definitely check out Out Of The Storm as well. I think I had a 'sometimers' moment thinking that Out of the FOG was CPTSD specific.

Welcome! Hmmm what is it about the book that makes you feel panicky? I think identifying what exactly is triggering you would be helpful in dealing with it and/or finding what is right for You right now. Yes, there are many other CPTSD resources, but they do have a lot of overlap.

A shot in the dark, but maybe something about that taking control and doing something about your symptoms is overwhelming you? Is there one baby step that feels safe?
