I'm just happy and proud.   My son is enjoying a dream summer trip backpacking/hosteling/traveling.  It is one of those adventures that he'll always remember.   He made it happen on his own and is traveling with a lifelong friend, making new friends.

When happy things would happen in my life, my parents always poo-pooed them.   Bought a new car....dad would say how that model would be carjacked.   Made a wonderful career choice.....dad would say that in the event of a nuclear holocaust....I'd never survive.   Have a child....now I'm tied down, etc.   Graduated from university....they didn't come.   It really hurt.   Now in late middle age....all I can think is that it the petty jealousy that comes with our collective parental territory.

This is a trip I wanted at his age.   I bought the backpack and kept my passport up-to-date, but could never afford to make the trip.   It was never a regret of mine.   I eventually did other amazing adventures....but it was a back of my mind kind of thing.   I never really even mentioned it to him.   And, I'm so over the moon for him I can't contain myself.   I'm so happy he's getting to make adventures and proud for him.

That's lovely. I am glad he is able to do it.

The poo-poo parents - yep. I am familiar. They were able to suck the joy out of pretty much anything. They still are, though I have got better at not letting them get to me these days.
Don't let the narcs get you down!

That's wonderful, Like the Ducks!

I can relate as well.

How much more rich and happy life is when we can actually be happy for the people we love.

Don't hang your passport up yet, you never know!   ;)

I had poo-poo parents too. Thank you for sharing this.
