I was on a trip last week over the holiday and read a book called Big Potential by Shawn Achor.    The author is a psychology Prof at Harvard and his research has been on the clinical and psychological causes of success.  The central thesis of the book is that you have to surround yourself with positive people that you help and who will also help you in order to be successful and feel good.    Although not a book about shedding bad relationships, it did go into a few discussions that negative people and relationships that do not share goals and outcomes will never result in what your brain perceives as joy.   He was quite scientific and clinical and I'm sure similar conclusions are in many of the books but at least the reinforcement was there.
It is unwise to seek prominence in a field whose routine chores you do not enjoy.
