That's like my mother.  She'll make vague negative statements ..... waiting for me to comment on it.  I don't take the bait anymore.  I also don't try to anticipate what she means when she uses cutesie alternative names for things.  And guess what?  She doesn't do it anymore.

My late uPD mum used to do this, my uPD H does it now. 

It feels to me like that are casting a big fishing net looking to catch some info.

Awareness is a game changer.

I used to hate the uncomfortable silence when I do not respond.  it feels heavy and kind of hanging in the air.  I got used to it and don't care now.  I am generally left the room by then these days anyways.

Haha yes I've tried the silent thing now....
