updating older posts?

Hi, I'm wondering whether it's appropriate to update an old post (a little over a year old) if there is a new development, or whether it would be better to make a new one.

More generally, are there guidelines about keeping our story in a single post vs. spreading it out? I know there's a comment limit that might be relevant in some cases. Apologies if this is somewhere in the board information already posted; I did look through it and didn't see it directly addressed.

if it's your post it makes sense to me to update-  you'll get a caution that the post is over so many days old but you can still post-i do that with my MIL posts because the back story is all in one place (which reminds me i need to update on that sitch)

we do lock posts when threads get to be 5 pages.
