I know this is a few weeks late, but to answer your question, no I don't think you are being hypersensitive.  Yes, they do exaggerate to make us feel guilty.  My mom is exactly the same.  And to say, "You have no idea", is really offensive in a way.  Have you never felt severe pain, physical or mental?  How does she know you have no idea?  Maybe you've never been through cancer and chemo, but I'm sure you've experienced something painful, because we all do.  But again, my mom is just the same.  Her pain, her problems, her stress are the worst thing anybody has ever felt in the history of humanity.
