I am amazed when I think about the changes I have seen in my spouse over the past 18 years.

He was always quirky, a bit hypomanic, but was a decent guy overall.  Then at some point things took a turn for the worse.

His mother was a grandiose narcissist.  It was a couple of years before her death that I began seeing changes in my spouse.  He was a super mommies boy.

He seemingly took her death much better than expected.  However he has been transitioning from a covert narc to a more overt narc ever since.

I am sure her passing left him stagnated looking for her approval at all costs.  I ha e been increasingly parentified ever since.  I am  not the grandious narc mommy was and my supply is not as potent.

The mind games and such are so sad in. Way. They often seem like aittle kid trying for attention.

Oh, my God...
This is almost the same scenario I have lived.
After the death of my MIL my H started to parentify me with an increasing pace.
The previous life was also parentifying, but like in your case, in form of being a mommies boy.
After she left for good, the things blew up.
He lost his grounds. There was no mother there to vent, to argue with, to search for the never given love.

In his mind, I had to take over her role completely.
And that was the end.
I somehow expected that with her death the tensions will cease, but that didn“t happen.
