Well, a night away.   My birthday is close, one of my consulting clients gave me a big Amex gift card for Christmas that my spouse doesn't know about and I'm going to take it, my books, my sketchbook and no computer to a boutique hotel in town and go for one night with a nice dinner, good breakfast the next day and mass and not have any issues with spouse or children for one night.   I told uOCPDw this was what I was doing and there was some griping but it won't be that bad.   I've never done something like this before

I didn't get to go.   My spouse lost it and the kids were a mess as well.  I had to cancel.  It was my birthday over the weekend.  That was another part of the effort.  I hoped to be away.   Through the years the family has been upset easily on anyone's birthday.  Someone always turns a simple family dinner with cake into a crisis.  This was sort of the same event.  I was trying to avoid the mess.   It's no big deal but it was one of the decade ones and I wanted to avoid the mess.   I eventually went into the office then in the way home stopped at a nice restaurant and had an appetizer and sketched a bit.   When I got home the house was in explosive chaos.  I guess what I learned is that it doesn't matter if I'm there or not or if it's a birthday or not.   The response the crew has is to have issues.   If I choose to go out and find some peace, the mess will still occur.   So inn that it was a happy afternoon for me.

Jsinjin,

Happy birthday to you!   Sorry you were not able to get away, but glad you proactively stopped for a quiet, happy afternoon birthday appetizer and some sketch time!

Wishing you progress and fortitude as you deal with the mess at home.

Sorry to hear you didn't get your night away.

Just to play devil's advocate here: If it's going to be a mess either way, why not stick to your plan and enjoy yourself?

jsinjin,

Happy Birthday!  Sorry you didn't get your peace and I am sending you birthday wishes for another peaceful time where you can schedule in in the future.  So glad that you did spend some time on yourself though.  You deserve it.
