I always knew my mom was selfish,  that she barely showed any interest in me,  that she was chaotic - often depressed and moving from place to place,  job to job a lot.

She was mostly pretty functional but lately she's gone batshit. She lived in another state up until February this year,  and suddenly moved (leaving everything behind) to my city even though we had a pretty distant relationship. I've been doing everything in my power to try to get her help, but she's half assed in her attempts and ignores advice.

I set a boundary that she crossed and so i blocked her #; then i got a call earlier from her neighbor saying she's going to the hospital bc she's not feeling well mentally. I called my brother and he said the word narcissist , and it clicked.  I can't believe it's taken me so long for that to start to sink in.

I'm reeling. I'm glad to have found this space.  ❤

Welcome! Isn't it baffling when the shutters come off? Many of us, in one way or another, choose a profession with the intention to heal ourselves and/or the loved ones in our life.  I have found that while I could help myself and get myself on a path of recovery, I was unable to do the same for my mother nor my husband.  So many years have I pretended that my H was a completely normal person with some oddities, when I should have known better. But here we are. The fog is lifting now.
You are not alone and you will find this place supportive and full of information. As a start I suggest you read the Toolbox and start implementing some of the strategies useful for you when dealing with your mother. See you around on the boards!
I can't hate my way into loving myself.
