Personality disorders and refusal of medical care

My husband refused to register with a doctor for more than 20 years.  He recently had to have emergency surgery for a condition he'd been complaining of for the best part of a decade.  He very nearly died of complications and was discharged around a month ago.  I insisted that he register with a local GP (we are in the UK), which he finally got round to last week, after pursuing many social engagements far sooner than he should have.  For reasons I'll not go into he had a tantrum at me on the day of registration and I snapped.  He's been silent treating me for 3 days which has actually been nice.

My question for the forum is what kind of personality disorder would refuse to engage with medical care?

Pretty much any of them have that potential. Some of them have the porential for the opposite, as well - heavily seeking medical care.

Some with narcissistic personality disorder may cope with medical issues by rewriting reality to suit them - they are fine, healthy. Some may even believe they can't be sick because they do everything right and/or are physically superior. Others may be secretly concerned but unable to cope, so they ignore it in the hopes it will go away.

Antisocials just may not notice or care and just do what feels good in the moment, which doesn't include seeing a GP.

Paranoids may distrust doctors. Or may feel doomed by fate and like there's nothing they can do.

Dependents may feel helpless and unmotivated to try anything.

I used to encourage my spouse to care for himself but I don't bother carrying his weight for him anymore.

Excellent answer from Square. Medical care or avoidance of it is one of those areas that are just ripe for PD shenanigans. Believing he doesn't need medical care looks like it could be a part of grandiosity.

I think you might be right on the grandiosity.  He has been lashing out at me a lot lately.  I've said stuff back to him, and I know I'm not supposed to.  But grey rocking just seems to make him even angrier.  I think the stress of providing care is getting to me.
