She approached my kids and daycare provider

I posted a few weeks ago about a voicemail my mom left for me, that she was going to contact a lawyer and family services about seeing my kids (grandparents rights, which aren't actually a thing where I live). Well today she escalated.

She approached my oldest (like got out of her car crouched down to her and said "hi [child's name]" and "I'm her grandma" to our daycare provider) while being walked home from school with our daycare provider. My daycare provider is thankfully quick thinking and she just took my child's hand and kept moving to head back to her house. I feel so guilty that my mother would stoop to this and involve people outside of the family. She obviously looked up the school's bell times and then staked her out on the street. It really freaked my daycare provider out.

I called the police and they said essentially they can do a house call or my other option is a restraining order filed with our local court house. And next time calling 911 would be appropriate (I didn't think that would constitute an "emergency" but the officer I spoke to said yes).

How have your experiences been with having the police go to speak with your parent, or filing restraining orders on them? I'm wondering if I should do both as a restraining order could take time?
