Hi, my teenage daughter has a emotional dysregulation disorder which tends to manifest itself in self harm.  We have already had one trip to the emergency dept (would have been 2 if I'd had my way).  She has tried CBT but apparently it doesn't work on her because she is "too self aware".  She is on anti depressants.  Looking for advice for all the family, support and stories of hope.  She is due to go to university next year and I want her to be able to cope and enjoy the opportunities!

Welcome CentipedeDressage,

I'm not a parent, but there are wonderful people here who are loving parents and work hard to do their best by their children. I know some of them will have words of wisdom for you, and you can also check out their stories in the different forum sections.

I also do not have a personality disorder, but I have struggled with "fleas" and trauma responses from being raised by disordered, chaotic parents. One thing that helped me was dialectical behavior therapy. This incorporates aspects of CBT but also teaches skills for emotional regulation and mindfulness which sometimes helps people for whom CBT interventions like reframing thoughts only provide a partial solution.

Wishing you and your daughter all the best.

Just want to add my welcome!

The parents section is a slow one, so don't feel discouraged when it takes a while to get a response.
I can't hate my way into loving myself.

Thank you both for the welcome.  I think DBT is the next thing to try, but she might need some persuading.
