Anyone here finds themselves watching tv shows especially ones with traumatic events that trigger them?
I am currently watching a popular tv show but I arrived at a most infamous season where the main character is killed off. He is brutalised by a psychopath. The writers show the scene not in so much detail but it was implied that the psychopath enjoyed his crime. The character was very important to the show and now he is gone.

I don't think I can continue watching it, it was hard to watch someone in the show that everyone depended on who, on top of it was kind and great go through something so brutal.

I love crime, horror and mystery tv shows. They are a guilty pleasure to me. Not sure I wanna give up this hobby. Do you think this has anything to do with childhood trauma?

Also, what kind of things do you guys watch on TV/Netflix? Do you make an effort to stay away from negative or horror shows that trigger you?

I have a hard time with thrillers, horror, & mysteries (& even shows like Manifest, which I had to quit halfway through season 3, I think) because it's such a mindfuck & I can't.  I can't handle the jump scares, the buildup of tension, none of it.  It starts affecting my sleep (I have nightmares/night terrors) & my anxiety skyrockets until I start having panic & anxiety attacks.  It's literally like my brain short circuits (I actually experience what I call shocks in my brain) with these shows.  I just can't.  It sucks.  I used to love the Goosebumps series as a kid, & was able to read some Stephen King books.  But even just mildly spooky things freak me out now.

Now I stick to dramas, (some) comedies, fluff shows like Emily in Paris, & children's movies like The Sea Beast (I love Maisie!).  Extraordinary Attorney Woo is beautifully done, although slightly problematic according to some autistic people.  I really enjoyed the script & the filmmaking, & the things they chose to focus on (they focus a little on the dynamic Woo has with her father, how he cares for her, & the "dance" ritual thing they do every morning is very, very sweet & endearing).  I also started Lucifer a year-ish ago, which is great.  The Bureau of Magical Things is cute with 0.01% scare that you totally see coming (cuz it's an Australian show mostly geared toward young teens), & Fisk (also Australian) is absolutely hilarious.  It's about a lawyer who got fired from her last job cuz she attacked her husband's (also a fellow lawyer at the firm) mistress when she dared show her face, & now she's landed at an estate planning firm & has great sketches that leave me in stitches.  It's very sly, sneaky humor that I enjoy very much, along with more slapstick "let's annoy this person" type bits.

Hi DaisyGirl77, yeah I have a hard time with that genre, too but I always thought Hey, I can tough it out.
Apparently I can't. I will have to quit my horror/crime show addiction-the show with the mutilation is too much for me, I'm currently in a freeze trauma mode. I just can't watch so much murder and cruelty at once.

Is Lucifer good? Sounds like it's up my alley. I'll check those other titles and see if I enjoy fluffier stuff.

Yes, it's excellent. It's a play on the Christian religion. Lucifer is all about hedonism, doing what makes you happy in the moment, and freely choosing whatever you like. He runs a fancy nightclub with one of his demon bodyguards and teams up with a Los Angeles cop after a murder happens in front of his nightclub. He's really funny. Is constantly teasing the cop and just so happens to solve crime while at it. (He also has daddy issues as the first season progresses, which you'll see if you watch.) It's really well/cleverly done. Think of it as similar to The Mentalist but with a twist.

I like watching 48 hrs & Dateline type crime. I've been watching since they began, about 30 yrs ago. True crime then was not as popular as it is today, everywhere. What attracted me then was how evil humans could be just to get what they want. It remains a guilty pleasure. ;)

Compared to others like criminal minds etc., they are much less graphic in the act itself.  As DaisyGirl 77 pointed out, they could be such a Mindfuck.  Toooo much for me.

When I was around 12 yrs old, my parents would watch Outer Limits.  It scared the living hell out of me.

Horror, NEVER.
I may be the black sheep of the family, but some of the white sheep are not as white as they try to appear.

@Daisy Gir77 thanks for the Lucifer recommendation. He's hilarious. i'm only at the beginning but like it so far. The part with him being in therapy is so odd but cute as well. It's interesting to see how he will evolve/change on earth. I also started to root for him to end up with the detective.  :-*
I'm watching another series-Supernatural. They also show Lucifer in there but Supernatural Lucifer is terrifying.

@black sheep7 Outer limits sounds terribly scary. I don't think I could watch it and I'm 41.
My parents also watched horror when I was a child eg. Tales from the crypt, X Files. X Files had some scenes that creeped me out. Maybe that's why I like horror now.

You're welcome!  A friend of mine told me about the show & confessed she's watched it several times over cuz it's so well done.  She's rarely this enthusiastic over shows, so I had to give it a try, & I'm so glad I did.  He's just delightful--you can just tell the actor loves the role.  I also love the tongue in cheek humor, & that they chose songs referencing hell in some way throughout the show, LOL.  & yes, the devil in therapy thing...OMG.  I can't.  They really went all out on this, it's fantastic.  LOL.

I found Supernatural too much for me, but I'm glad you're enjoying that one, too. :)
